Hello Everyone!
As some of you who read my blog may know, I recently purchased a Black Compact Holborn Filofax. As of right now I am completely in Love with it!
So I thought today I would talk about what I feel are the pros and cons that go along with having a compact Filofax. Hopefully this will help anyone who is trying to decide whether or not a compact is for them!
Lets jump in! ...
The Pros:
- Helps keep you super organized because it limits what you can store in it; therefore, you have to clean it out often!
- It helps you really focus on planning without adding a pile of stuff that you never look at.
- It is the perfect size to throw in your bag and take with you on the go. Not only is the size convenient, but because the rings are small you are forced to carry less making your planner lighter!
- You can switch between a compact and personal on a regular basis without any fuss. Both take the same size refills so if at any point you feel like switching, just take out the pages and may a quick switch. No need for rewriting and reprinting everything on to different sized paper!
- They work well as a wallet because of their small thin size. Who wants to carry around a super bulky binder as a wallet.
The Cons:
- The small size restricts what you can put in the planner. This may be a bad thing for those who like to keep lists, calendars, cards, etc. in the planner. Basically for those who like to store their whole life in their Filofax :)
- The writing space is limited as it is in a personal as well. So if you write a lot go with an A5!
That seems to be all I can come up with! The pros outweigh the cons in my opinion, and I can't imagine not using a compact in the future. I specifically love the Holborn because the leather feels so good!
Remember these are just my opinions. If you feel differently, I respect that. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Also if anyone can think of any pros or cons that I haven't come up with please leave them in the comments for other to read.
Thank you so much for taking the time to check out my blog. As always please follow me on bloglovin' or by email for future updates. I try to post once a week sometimes twice. I would really appreciate requests or suggestions for future posts! If you like this blog please share it with others!
Thanks for reading!

You make excellent points! I'd add a pro and con though: pro - the small rings make writing much easier. Con - the compacts are really narrow, so anything wider than a standard insert really sticks out, sometimes so far the clasp won't even close
ReplyDeleteThose are great points! I find it easier to write with the smaller rings and completely forgot that one! I haven't experienced any problem with insert however I can definitely see that being a problem!
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading! Glad you enjoyed :)
I also love the compact size because of the weight and the more comfortable writing.
ReplyDeleteStephanie, I've been debating the compact. Please could you tell me if I could fit a years worth of a week on 2 pages with a to do list between each page? Thanks
ReplyDeleteWould that be all your putting in there? If so I think it would fit fine. I have Sept - December month at a glance, Nov 1 2013 - Dec 31 2014 week on 2 pages, 3 address sheets, 3 dividers, a cover page, a top opening pocket with 2 photos in it, and two today rulers, and I don't find it stuffed to the point that its hard to turn pages (I hate that feeling) So I feel it can fit a decent amount of stuff. If you decide to go with a compact the holborn is really nice and I think the compact is on sale still from $85 to $34! Great deal and its real leather! Hope this helped and good luck! :)
DeleteLet me know if you have any more questions!
I have a Regency Compact and I am using week-on-2-pages with one sheet notepaper in between. That works great and fits perfectly, leaving more space for additional notepaper that I use to track expenses and other information.
DeleteI I use my compact as my on the go filofax, taking things out of my personal that I might need on the go, keeping a monthly summary of my schedule and basically as a notebook. So for example if I pen a blog post while out and about with my compact, I then transfer it back into my personal sized blog planner when it is no longer needed.
ReplyDeleteThe pros def outweigh the cons on this one :)
That is a really great idea! It would work perfect for people who like to keep a lot in their planner but want to carry a lighter planner with them! :)
DeleteTried doing the Compact thing--twice! Just never clicked. Too bad, because I had to sell a Compact Calipso in the BEAUTIFUL blue because it didn't work out. Maybe one day, but for now the personal is the perfect size for me. :)
ReplyDeleteI think if I had the choice between the personal and the compact Holborn I would have chosen the personal size, but I find I can use the compact because I don't keep a ton of stuff in my planner. I just REALLY wanted the Holborn haha :)
DeleteI agree with your pros, the cons do not apply in my case. I am still happy I switched to the Regency Compact as my constant companion. My Siena Personal Size is my home book which holds all my personal information that I do not want to carry around with me. Just recently I was at an insurance office getting an automobile quote, so I took the pages with relevant info out of my Siena and added them to the Regency just for this meeting. I was all set to answer any possible questions. The agent was so impressed that I was so organized....
